Early in the morning, you depart from Nairobi and drive towards Nanyuki town, continuing to the Sirimon Gate of Mount Kenya National Park. After completing park entry formalities, you begin the hike towards Old Moses Camp. The hike takes approximately three to four hours, covering a distance of about nine kilometers. This section of the trail passes through beautiful forest zones and unique high-altitude vegetation, offering an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. You arrive at Old Moses Camp at an altitude of 3,300 meters, where you check in, have dinner, and spend the night.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp – Shipton’s Camp (4,200 m)
After breakfast, you start the hike from Old Moses Camp to Shipton’s Camp. This is a longer and more challenging day, taking between six to eight hours and covering approximately seventeen kilometers. The trail passes through the Liki North Valley and the Mackinder’s Valley, offering spectacular views of Mount Kenya’s peaks and alpine landscapes. The gradual ascent helps further with acclimatization. Upon arrival at Shipton’s Camp, located at 4,200 meters, you relax, have dinner, and overnight at the camp.
Day 3: Shipton’s Camp – Point Lenana – Old Moses Camp – Nairobi
On the final day, you wake up at around 3.00 am and begin the summit attempt to Point Lenana. The climb follows a steep, stony trail cutting through a rocky quarry and cliff sections, with visibility improving as you approach Lower Hall Tarns. You reach Point Lenana at approximately 6.30 am after about three hours of hiking, just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise. After spending some time at the summit, you descend back to Shipton’s Camp, taking about two hours, where breakfast is served. You then continue the descent for a further four hours down to Old Moses Camp. From there, you transfer back to Nairobi, arriving later in the day, marking the end of the Mount Kenya climb.
